Le Pen Benefits from France's Jitters Over Muslims

Recent opinion polls are telling. In a survey conducted by TNS-Sofres last month, 43 percent of respondents judged Le Pen's ideas "excessive," but only 39 percent of respondents found them "unacceptable," down from 48 percent in 1997.

Sixty-three percent of those questioned said there were too many immigrants in France, an increase of 4 points from 2000. A separate poll by the CSA institute showed that one in three French people consider themselves "racist;" a year ago it was one in four....

Le Pen's party appears to have benefited from the riots. National Front membership has increased by about 20 percent, to nearly 90,000, since October, a party official said.

This is unfortunate. Concerned French citizens will all be deemed racist because they are just sick of not being able to walk in the Muslim neighbourhoods and they are sick of the car torchings every night. The government will know what's "best" for the people and they will not take calls to reduce immigration seriously, they'll see it as a pretext for more "integration" of people who do not want to be integrated, and that means more tax dollars. LePen should not be voted for at all. I know he's been giving interviews and toning down his anti-Americanism and even his antisemitism but I think it's all an act because there is a chance that he might be a viable candidate this time round (the BNP is doing the same thing in Britain). I hope the French vote for Sarkozy or de Villiers instead. Sarkozy is mainstream and de Villiers has actually reformed and he is more concerned with immigration than Sarkozy. By ignoring the problem of Muslim immigration, France could veer to the far right. Let's hope it doesn't happen.
